differentiates a business from their competitors and fosters customer loyalty. Intellectual
property (IP) protection is an essential tool in the process of brand creation.
In this session, participants will learn the basics of IP, then take a deeper dive into
trademarks using USPTO tools.

Dr. Kathleen Lanman, Education Program Specialist in the Office of Public Engagement
Kathleen Lanman is an Education Program Specialist in the Office of Public Engagement at the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO). Her mission is to educate the public about invention,
innovation, and intellectual property. Prior to joining the USPTO, Dr. Lanman taught STEM Science to middle grade students and worked with Georgia Tech InVenture Prize to bring professional development directly to teachers in rural parts of the state. Dr. Lanman is a graduate of Eastern Illinois University, where she received her bachelor’s degree in Education. She later attended The University of Georgia to study Educational Leadership, where she graduated with a master’s degree in 1998 and her doctorate in 2004. She has been recognized regionally and nationally for her innovative teaching methods. In 2018, she was selected by The Henry Ford Museum as an Innovation Nation Teacher Innovator; in 2019, she received the Governor’s Office of Student Achievement Innovation in Teaching Award; In 2020, was selected to serve for a year as an Albert Einstein Distinguished STEM Educator Fellow in Washington, DC and also received the Georgia Youth Science and Technology Centers Georgia STEM Scholar Award; and in 2022 she was selected to serve as Educator-in-Residence for RoboNation.
Jason Lott, Managing Attorney for Trademarks Customer Outreach
Jason Lott is the Managing Attorney for Trademarks Customer Outreach at the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) where he specializes in helping small business owners understand trademarks and the federal trademark registration process. He conceptualizes and delivers educational content using live presentations, creative videos, and other multimedia platforms. He also presents to experienced practitioners on advanced trademark topics, providing them the tools and expertise to better serve their clients. Jason began his career at the USPTO in 2000 as a trademark examining attorney.
